Oosterpark: separating
presence from attention.
A matched-pair behavioural assessment at the Nationaal Slavernijmonument, Amsterdam Oost. Conducted July 2026. Commissioned by no one: a self-directed validation of the instrument.
The Nationaal Slavernijmonument commemorates the Dutch history of slavery and the people who lived it, and it stands in Oosterpark as a place of remembrance. This assessment is an independent, anonymous observation of public space, conducted with no affiliation to the monument, its maker, or its stewards. Behaviour was recorded in aggregate only; no individual was identified, followed, or photographed.
One site holds a monument. The other is a bare passage, one hundred metres away.
49% paused at the monument. 25% at the control.
27% lingered beyond 30 seconds. 18% at the control, where a water source draws lingerers of its own.
33% engaged directly with the work. At the control, where no work stands, directed engagement was zero under every condition observed.
130 seconds: the median time held, among those who stopped. Over 450 zone entries observed across both sites.
On one occasion, the control site outperformed the monument.
Read as raw data, a bare passage had beaten a national monument at holding human attention. The behavioural record explained it: the control carries a water source, and a water source draws bodies reliably. A tap can out-linger a monument, and it means nothing about the monument. It means presence and attention are different quantities. This is why every recorded stop carries an attribution: directed at the work, or unrelated to it.
An instrument that has never been embarrassed by a site has not yet been tested by one.
The assessment establishes a behavioural effect. It claims no financial one. In a fixed matched pair, under varied weather, a work of public art held the attention of a third of the people who passed it. A matched space without one held none. That is a narrow finding, and an observed one.
